Het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek met vestigingen in Heerlen en Den Haag, produceert en publiceert onbetwiste, actuele, relevante en samenhangende statistische informatie voor beleid, wetenschap en praktijk.

Onbetwist betekent voor ons dat er niet getwijfeld mag worden aan de uitkomsten. Het debat moet gaan over de consequenties van de cijfers en niet over de kwaliteit van de cijfers. Het CBS moet volstrekt onafhankelijk zijn in het samenstellen van de

informatie en moet zich niet laten beïnvloeden door welke andere partij dan ook.

De informatie moet actueel zijn, maandcijfers moeten beschikbaar zijn in de maand volgend over de maand waarover gerapporteerd wordt. Hetzelfde geldt voor kwartaal en jaarstatistieken. De informatie moet relevant zijn. Het CBS moet dus goed luisteren naar de gebruikers van de informatie en telkens afwegingen maken of er geen wijzigingen in het programma moet worden doorgevoerd. De informatie moet samenhangend zijn. Het CBS heeft toegevoegde waarde door samenhangende statistieken te maken. Het CBS neemt binnen de Nederlandse Overheid een unieke plaats in. Hoewel wij overwegend door de Overheid worden bekostigd, zijn we een volstrekt onafhankelijk kennisinstituut.

De uitkomsten van de CBS statistieken zijn voor iedereen beschikbaar en geven inzicht in vrijwel alle sociaal economische en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen. Uitkomsten worden onder meer gepubliceerd op www.cbs.nl

In de pers verschijnen bijna dagelijks berichten die gebaseerd zijn op statistisch onderzoek. Artikelen over de werkgelegenheid, de inflatie en de groei van de Nederlandse economie zijn niet volledig zonder de cijfers van het CBS.

Het CBS maakt deel uit van een internationaal, vooral Europees, statistisch netwerk. Binnen de Europese Unie levert het CBS de officiële gegevens over Nederland. Binnen Eurostat, het statistisch bureau van de Europese Unie, werken we actief mee aan de ontwikkeling van methoden en technieken.

Zit je in de laatste fase van je bachelor of master? Heb je affiniteit met statistisch onderzoek en statistische processen? Met name voor WO-studenten met een sterk kwantitatieve component in hun studie, zoals studenten econometrie, wiskunde en economie hebben wij verschillende mogelijkheden. Ook studenten met name in de richting informatica en studenten in één van de sociale wetenschappen (sociologie, onderwijskunde, criminologie of politicologie) kunnen voor een stage- of afstudeeropdracht bij ons terecht. Het CBS kan niet los worden gezien van de Overheid maar door onze bijzondere positie heerst er in de vestigingen in Heerlen en Den Haag een speciale werksfeer.

Onze kring van zo'n 2300 medewerkers is buitengewoon gemêleerd: veel nationaliteiten, een zeer diverse achtergrond als het gaat om studierichtingen en loopbaanstappen. Wat onze medewerkers ook belangrijk vinden is dat ons land wordt bestuurd op basis van goede argumenten, argumenten waarvoor het CBS de informatie levert. Daardoor is het misschien wel the best of many worlds: werken bij het CBS is een aangename mix van werken bij de Overheid, ruimte voor een vrij en academisch denkklimaat maar ook van de dynamiek van de maatschappij die we op de voet volgen.

With offices in Heerlen and The Hague, Statistics Netherlands produces and publishes undisputed, up-to-date, relevant and consistent statistics for the purposes of policy, science and practice.

For us, undisputed means that there are no doubts about the results. Debate must centre on the consequences of the figures, not about the quality of the figures themselves. Statistics Netherlands must be in a position to compile this information completely independently, uninfluenced by any party whatsoever.

The information must be as up-to-date as possible, monthly figures must be published in the month following the month they refer to. The same applies to quarterly and annual figures. The information must be relevant. Statistics Netherlands must listen to the users of the information and remain alert to changes in users' wishes and the consequences of these for the statistical programme. The information must be consistent. This is the added value of Statistics Netherlands: it produces consistent statistics. It has a unique position within Dutch government. Although most of its work is funded by the government, it is a completely independent knowledge institution.

The results of our statistics are available to everyone and provide an insight into nearly all economic and social trends and developments. Results are published on www.cbs.nl.

Almost every day, Dutch newspapers contain reports based on statistical outcomes. Items on unemployment, inflation and economic growth are not complete without figures from Statistics Netherlands.

Statistics Netherlands is part of an international - mainly European - statistical network. Within the European Union, Statistics Netherlands supplies the official figures for the Netherlands. Within Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, we actively collaborate in the development of methods and techniques.
